So we finally did it—we took our first road trip to Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco), Mexico, and let me tell you, we’re already planning our next visit.
After 27 years of living in Arizona, Patrick had never been to Rocky Point. Meanwhile, Tameka had been trying to convince him for years. Clients had been raving about it, and we were long overdue for one of our quick getaways (we try to take a trip every 4–6 weeks). Sedona and Cottonwood were just too expensive this time—thanks, snowbird season—so we finally decided to give Mexico a shot.
Expectations vs. Reality
Tameka expected a chill beach town with local stores, restaurants, and that laid-back vibe. Patrick? Not so much. He thought it might be rough once we crossed the border and didn’t know what to expect from the beach.
Turns out, it was way better than expected.
We stayed at Las Palomas Resort, and it was beautiful. Our one-bedroom condo had an ocean view, a balcony, full kitchen, and all the space we needed. There was a coffee shop, multiple restaurants, a nice gym (more on that in a second), grills, and more. The check-in process was slow—but they had people in training, so we let it slide.
The Drive & Border Crossing
We crossed at the Lukeville border, and honestly, it was easy. No crazy stops, no issues. We bought Mexican insurance ahead of time for $70 (3 days), and Patrick drove like the most careful man on earth—cruise control set to match the speed limit exactly. Tameka was annoyed, of course.
A quick tip: get gas about an hour before the border—there’s nothing at Lukeville. We almost learned that the hard way.
Crossing into Mexico, they asked us to pull over, checked the trunk and back seat, and we were good to go. On the way back, they looked a little more carefully, but nothing major.
Exploring the Resort & City
Once we arrived, we checked in and took a little time to walk around. Then we hit up a local grocery store for breakfast stuff, snacks, beer, and wine—and spent only $42. Seriously. Eggs, bacon, tortillas, cheese, chips, drinks, 12-pack of beer, bottle of wine. Insane.
That first night, we had dinner at the resort restaurant. We were bracing ourselves for a big bill, but they had specials and a discount for guests. Two cocktails, two entrees, dessert, and two beers—under $50. We were already in love with Rocky Point.
The Gym, the Beach, and New Friends
One of the biggest surprises was the resort gym. Super clean, well-equipped, and we even met Frank—a Chicago native who helped build it. He gave us all the backstory on the resort, the gym equipment (even rehab tools!), and how things have changed over the years.
The beach? Also a win. Clean, soft sand, and they were constantly grooming it. The tide changes were wild—one moment it looks far out and not-so-pretty, the next it’s high and beautiful. It was great for running, relaxing, and just enjoying a peaceful moment.
Where We Ate (and Why We’re Going Back)
We stopped at Wrecked at the Reef for a quick drink and to take in the ocean view, but our real dinner was at Garufa Steakhouse—and wow, it did not disappoint.
The customer service was hands-down some of the best we’ve had in a long time. We had tortilla soup loaded with fresh toppings (avocado, fresh cheese, handmade tortillas), pasta, wine, beer, and a perfectly cooked filet. The vibe was upscale, the staff was incredible, and the price? Under $50 for both of us.
If we’d had the same meal in Phoenix, we would’ve easily paid $175–$200. This place is a hidden gem, and we’ll definitely be going back next time we’re in Puerto Peñasco.
Final Thoughts
Yes, we’re absolutely going back. This summer, we’re bringing the kids. And the grandkids. And honestly, we’d even consider investing in a condo at Las Palomas one day (though right now those are going for $500K–$900K… so maybe not just yet 😅).
If you’ve been thinking about taking the drive to Rocky Point, just do it. For real. We felt safe, welcomed, and relaxed the entire time—and it’s a memory we’re grateful for.
Thanks for rolling with us through this recap. Keep an eye out—we’ll be sharing video clips on TikTok and YouTube soon. And if you’ve been to Rocky Point, let us know your favorite spots so we can check them out next time!
